Anhay Organic Herefords

    "The Natural Choice"

A warm welcome awaits all those who would like to visit
the most southerly herd of pedigree Hereford cattle in the UK.

A little bit of news-
We purchased Lisrace Lumberjack and Lisrace Lucy V at the National Hereford Show in August 2011.
Having seen Lumberjack as a calf and being impressed with him, we were happy to have the chance of obtaining him at Tenbury.
Lucy is a sweet heifer with her maternal line tracing back to the Badlingham Curlys. We hope she will be the foundation of a new family at Anhay.

John & Melanie Williams & Family

About us: An-Hay and Tregeague Farms were purchased by my husband's Great Grandfather W G Williams on the 24th December 1909. Since then his son R Williams (known as Capn. Dick) and his son W G Williams (known as Gerald) farmed the farms before my husband - John Williams took on the running of the farms together with our son Antony Williams (known as A.J.)
We now have 2 Grand-daughters who both love the freedom of the farm and 'helping' with the cattle
.

John and Melanie would like to express their gratitude for the exceptional hospitality received from the Hereford breeders on their visit to Canada in 2009, and also to the Hereford breeders they visited while in Ireland. A GREAT way to make friendships and it is hoped to reciprocate the kindness when these breeders visit Cornwall.

The Anhay herd was established in 1977 and now consists of 45-50 breeding cows and their followers, totaling approx. 140 head. The herd has been BSE free and TB clear since its formation and has been a 'closed' herd for the last 10 years (apart from the stock bulls and Lisrace Lucy V purchased in August 2011).

The cattle have won the S.W.H.A. Herd Competitions and many Breed and Inter-breed Championships in the show ring over the years.

The S.W.H.A. Large Herd Competition 2011 -
Anhay Organic Herefords achieved 3rd place (against conventionally farmed herds).

Quality and Consistency due to the depth of breeding

The intention has been to gradually increase the size of the Hereford without sacrificing its wonderful merits which include easy fleshing, easy calving and a wonderful disposition which are so important.

To achieve this stock bulls which have both 'Canadian' and the 'Best of British' blood lines have been chosen. This has resulted in larger (but not extreme) docile cows which calve easily and milk well - thus rearing good calves whilst lasting well into their teens.

The bulls produced here are easy to manage, easy to calve from and breed-on due to their 'depth of breeding', and as they are not 'forced' when young - they last well too!

The cattle are housed during the winter to prevent poaching the land. In the summer they graze (and silage is made) on about 100 acres. The calves are not creep fed until just before weaning thus allowing us to observe the dam's milking ability.

OF&GThe farm converted to organic production with Organic Farmers and Growers in 2001, and is farmed under Organic Stewardship.

Anhay cattle are bred and reared in natural conditions on the Lizard Peninsula, and as the Hereford is renowned throughout the world for its tractability and wonderful conversion of grass into top quality beef, the Hereford is "The Natural Choice"

Anhay Herefords

About 10 heifers are kept as replacements for the herd each year and calve at the age of 2 to 2.5 years, while the remainder are sold as pedigree breeding stock. The best 8-10 bulls are sold for breeding. The remaining steers sold locally for their top quality organic beef
